What is the difference between Hacking and Cracking?

Hacking, and cracking. Two different forms of Internet and computer related privacy and copyright breaches, usually malicious. I'll be discussing the differences between hacking, and cracking. They are two completely different things, but people usually get confused between the two, they both end with a similar sound, or 'hacking' (that's probably why!) and they're both malicious forms of cyber activity. I'll be talking about the difference between hacking, and cracking.

  • Let's start off by explaining what the words mean, in computer vocabulary - that is. Hacking, is the act of stealing personal or private data, without the owner's knowledge or consent, it could also include other things like stealing passwords, creating a bot net, or pretty much any act that  breaches someone's privacy, without their knowledge, or consent.
  • Now, on to cracking. Cracking is where edit a program's source code, or you could create a program, like a key generator (more commonly known as a 'keygen'), patch, or some sort of application that tricks an application in to thinking that a particular process has occurred. For example, a key generator and a patch for the Adobe Master Collection would trick the software in to thinking that the key entered is correct, and not let it  verify the key with the Adobe master server. Cracking is pretty much looking for a back door in software, and exploiting it for malicious use or for a copyright breaching act.
The difference (if you have not noticed it yet) is that a hacker is someone that uses their extensive knowledge of computer logic and code for malicious purposes, while a cracker - looks for back doors in programs, and exploits those back doors. Cracking is generally less harmful than hacking. Hackers are usually involved with web related hacking, like MySQL interception, or phishing, other forms of hacking would include things like brute force, or password lifting.

Well, the difference is simple. One is more malicious than the other, crackers usually have an extensive knowledge in code related to Python and .NET (Visual Basic, C, C++, C#) and Objective C (Mac), while hackers are fluent in different forms of web code, like PHP, MySQL, Java Script , Ajax, and HTML and CSS. I hope, after reading this, we all have got what the difference between hacking, and cracking are. Basically, it's just what they do, that's the difference

How does a programmer keep in touch with all the languages (C, C++, C#, Java, Python, PHP, etc.) he/she learnt during the last decade or two?

Fortran, Pascal, Shell Scripting, C, C++, C#, Java, PHP, Python, HTML, JavaScript & SQL

I used them all over last two years depending on what problem I was solving, when and where. There is no way I can “keep in touch” will all those languages. It is not even expected.

I would have become irrelevant and jobless long ago if I had called myself “Fortran Programmer”. Stop looking at yourself as a programmer who knows a particular language or framework or platform or browser or tool. You will soon become obsolete. Look at yourself as a problem solver who can solve a variety of problems and pick the right weapon for each task.

For interviews, just highlight/choose one programming language, preferably, the one used in solving the latest problem. Don’t bother to apply at companies who expect you to remember the syntax of every single language you have ever used. They are wasting your time.

What is HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)?

Hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) is the core communications protocol used to reach the World Wide Web and nowadays is used by all of the web applications. It is a simple protocol that was originally generated for retrieving static text-based resources. Hypertext is structured text that uses logical links (hyperlinks) between nodes containing text.
HTTP uses a server-client model. A client may be a home computer, laptop, or mobile device. The HTTP server is typically a web host running web server software, such as Apache or IIS. When you access a website, your browser sends a request to the web server, and it responds with an HTTP status code. If the URL is valid and the connection is granted, the server will send your browser the web page and related files.
It defines methods such as GET and POST, which are used to manage form submissions on websites. Encrypted HTTP connections take place over HTTPS, an extension of HTTP designed for secure data transmissions.
It uses a message-based model in which a client sends a request message and the server returns a response message. The protocol is essentially connectionless: although HTTP uses the stateful TCP protocol as its transport mechanism, each exchange of request and response is an autonomous transaction and may use a different TCP connection.
Normal HTTP request consists of these items:
  • A verb indicating the HTTP method.
  • The requested URL.
  • The HTTP version being used.
  • The Referer header is used to indicate the URL from which the request originated
  • The User-Agent header is used to provide information about the browser or other client software that generated the request.
  • The Host header specifies the hostname that appeared in the full URL being accessed.
  • The Cookie header is used to submit additional parameters that the server has issued to the client.

What is the difference between PHP and ASP?

Key difference: PHP is a server-side scripting language that has its main implementation in web development. However, it can be used as a general-purpose programming language. ASP stands for Active Server Pages. It is commonly known as Classic ASP or ASP Classic. It is a server-side scripting environment that is developed and released by Microsoft.

PHP is a server-side scripting language that has its main implementation in web development. However, it can be used as a general-purpose programming language. PHP was originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995 and it is currently managed by The PHP Group. PHP originally stood for Personal Home Page, however, it was later renamed. It now stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, a recursive acronym. PHP is free software released under the PHP License, as is incompatible with the GNU General Public License (GPL) due to restrictions on the usage of the term PHP.
PHP is an open source, server-side, HTML embedded scripting language. It can basically perform any task that other CGI programs can, but it is mainly used to create dynamic Web pages. Its main advantage is that it is compatible with many types of databases. Furthermore, PHP can talk across networks using IMAP, SNMP, NNTP, POP3, or HTTP.
PHP includes a command-line interface capability and can be used in standalone graphical applications. PHP commands can be embedded directly into an HTML source document rather than calling an external file to process data. In the HTML document, the PHP script is enclosed within special PHP tags. Due to these tags, the programmer can alternate between HTML and PHP instead of having to rely on heavy amounts of code to output HTML. Also, as PHP is executed on the server, the client cannot view the PHP code.

ASP stands for Active Server Pages. It is commonly known as Classic ASP or ASP Classic. It is a server-side scripting environment that is developed and released by Microsoft. It was Microsoft's first server-side script engine for dynamically generated web pages. ASP was originally released as part of the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. It was meant to be an add-on to Internet Information Services (IIS). Since, then ASP has been superseded by ASP.NET, another product by Microsoft.
ASP is mainly used to create and run dynamic, interactive Web server applications. It also allows one to combine HTML pages, script commands, and COM components to create interactive Web pages and powerful Web-based applications. It also makes it easier to develop and modify the said Web applications.
After its original release, there have been two version releases. The ASP 2.0 introduced six built-in objects to the original, which were Application, ASPError, Request, Response, Server, and Session. ASP 3.0 introduced some additional enhancements such as Server.Transfer method, Server.Execute method and an enhanced ASPError object. Additionally, ASP 3.0 also enabled buffering by default and optimized the engine for better performance. However, as of May 2013, there are no planned upgrades to ASP.
Some differences between PHP and ASP:
  • ASP only runs on IIS installed on a Windows platform server
  • PHP code runs faster than ASP.
  • ASP is built on COM based architecture, which is an overhead for the server whereas PHP code runs in its own memory space.
  • PHP programs can run on various platforms like Linux, Unix, Windows, and Solaris whereas ASP is mainly associated with Windows platforms.
  • PHP has inbuilt features like FTP, email from a web page or even encryption mechanisms but in ASP such features are not built in.
  • PHP is based on C++ language and the syntax used in PHP is quite similar to C/C++. ASP’s syntax is based on the syntax of Visual Basic.
  • PHP can connect to various databases, mainly MySQL, whereas ASP mainly uses MS-SQL.
  • PHP codes tend to easier than ASP codes.

The 9 Most In-demand Programming Languages

The top 9 Best Programming Languages You Should Learn In 2017

With new programming languages being written, frameworks being created, the world of programming is full of action. There are some lists that suggest that there are close to 300 different programming languages one can learn. As the technology world continues to grow especially with the oncoming deluge of Internet of Things (IoT), the need for programmers and other affiliated coding skills continue to rise. However, given the fact that there are close to 300 different programming languages one can learn, pursuing the right programming language from a career perspective can be a big challenge.
To help you solve this dilemma, codingdojo.com has compiled a list of the nine most in-demand programming languages of 2017.

1. SQL

Compared to last year, the number of job descriptions that included SQL (Structured Query Language) increased by nearly 50,000 this year, giving SQL a huge lead over the other languages.

SQL is a special-purpose language designed for managing data held in a relational database management system (RDBMS), or for stream processing in a relational data stream management system (RDSMS). It is also very common, with many variations like MySQL and Microsoft SQL. Last year, Microsoft released SQL Server 2016, which introduced several new features to make the language more open-source like integration with R, the popular data analysis programming language, and a Linux version, making it an extremely well-known language.

2. Java

Probably due to the continuous growth of Android, the number of Java positions available on Indeed went up by almost 30,000 in 2017, as compared to 2016.

Java is one of the most popular, most adopted and general purpose programming language used by millions of developers and billions of devices around the world. It is a class-based, object-oriented language and designed to be portable, which means that you can find it on all platforms, operating systems, and devices. It is used to develop all kinds of Android apps, desktop apps, and video games. It is also commonly used as a server-side language for enterprise-level backend development. This programming language has long-term compatibility and developers are comfortable with Java.

Users are pretty excited about the upcoming Java 9 launch in July 2017, even though Java Enterprise Edition experienced a decline in popularity in 2016.

3. Python

Python moved up two places in codingdojo.com rankings to be the third-most in-demand language by job posting due to its constant growth in popularity in 2016.
Python is a widely used high-level programming language used for general-purpose programming, as it is simple and readable. Python is the easiest coding language to learn for the first time learners. In order to become a seasoned professional, every beginner should at least know this language. Several libraries have been created for Python related to mathematics, physics and natural processing due to its use in the educational field. Tech giants like Google and Yahoo along with NASA, PBS, and Reddit use Python for their websites.
Microsoft launched the beta version 2.0 of its Cognitive Toolkit open source deep-learning framework in October 2016, which includes support for Python.

4. JavaScript

Although JavaScript (not to be confused with Java) slipped down one place in codingdojo.com’s ranking as compared to 2016, the number of job postings stayed almost the same.

JavaScript is a popular, powerful, dynamic, scripting language that is used to create cool websites and games for the web. It derives much of its syntax from The C Language. JavaScript is compatible across all browsers and is used in over 90 percent of all web pages. In recent years, JavaScript has also gained use as the foundation of Node.js, a server technology that among other things enables real-time communication. In 2016, compatibility and adoption of JavaScript 6 continued to grow and Progressive Web Apps became more usable, allowing offline-first functionality for web apps.

5. C++

C++ saw an increase of almost 20,000 job postings over 2016 that has helped it to take fifth place in the rankings.

C++ is a general-purpose programming language based on C language. It has imperative, object-oriented and generic programming features. C++ is a powerful, high-performance language used to build system software, games engines and desktop and web apps.

6. C# (C Sharp)

“C Sharp” saw a small increase in popularity in 2017, but not enough to keep it from falling behind C++.
C Sharp is a simple, modern, general-purpose, type-safe, object-oriented programming language, which is developed by Microsoft. The language is intended for use in developing software components suitable for deployment in distributed environments. It is used in a number of applications such as .NET. Since the release of the.NET Core open-source development platform in June 2016, it can now be used on non-Windows machines. Several features in C# 7.0 were released last year, including language support for Tuples, pattern matching, local functions, and more.

7. Perl

Thanks to its popularity, Perl has climbed up the ladder to secure the seventh place in the rankings leaving iOS, PHP and Ruby behind.
Perl, or “the duct tape that holds the Internet together,” as it’s been named, is actually two languages now; Perl 5 and Perl 6, which launched in Dec. 2015. Both of them are general-purpose dynamic programming languages that see a lot of use in CGI, graphics, network, and finance programming. Some think the growth of DevOps led to the increase in its popularity because Perl is versatile and works well with other languages, making it a good DevOps tool.

8. iOS Family

Many of the developers writing for the iOS operating system use Objective-C, C, or Apple’s new Swift programming language. Apple Inc. introduced Swift, a new programming language for all iOS and OS X applications. In fact, Swift is displacing Objective C as the de facto language for iOS development a lot faster than anyone expected due to its scalability, speed, ease of use and strong demand from the mobile app marketplace.
In September 2016, Apple released Swift 3.0 with new features including better translation of Objective-C APIs, modernizations of debugging identifiers and a new model for collections and indices. Apple plans to release Swift 3.1 and Swift 4 in 2017.

9. PHP

PHP (Hypertext Pre-Processor) is a server-side programming language, which can be used to create web pages written in HTML. It is used on more than 80 percent of websites today including Facebook, Wikipedia, Tumblr, and WordPress. PHP is not only a popular language among new programmers due to its easy-to use techniques; it also does offer tons of advanced features for more experienced programmers. In recent years, PHP has grown enormously in popularity. It's web-facing features make it a highly-demanded skill, especially when paired with Javascript and SQL.17.  Learn PHP
